Concert Review: George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic Bring Funk to the Stage
At 85 years old, George Clinton seems to have no intention of slowing down, as evidenced by his recent performance at the Enmore Theatre. Dressed in gold, Clinton, along with a multitude of musicians, delved deep into the cosmic depths of funk, creating a stage packed with music that embodied the essence of P-Funk. The mix of blaring horns, intertwining guitars, and layered vocals set the crowd into a unified groove, showcasing the raw energy and unrestrained spirit of the performance.
One of the most striking aspects of the show was witnessing a generational handover in real-time. Seasoned veterans like Michael “Clip” Payne held down the fort, while newer faces like Garrett “Starchild Jr” Shider and Scottie Clinton infused the performance with fresh energy. Scottie, in particular, caught the eye with her disco-rave attire, lively movements, and contagious cosmic joy.
Clinton himself has embraced his role as a conductor, leading the musical symphony from the center stage with a wide smile and pointed finger. While vocal duties were shared among the performers, the seamless transition between songs like ‘Flash Light’, ‘One Nation Under a Groove’, ‘Atomic Dog’, and ‘Cosmic Slop’ drew enthusiastic responses from the audience. Beyond the individual songs, the overarching narrative of an 85-year-old legend still touring the world with a multi-generational musical family left a lasting impact – a testament to the beauty, vitality, and sheer joy of the performance.
