Buffalo Jones’ new album, “Celebrate,” showcases their continued sharpness
Spokane’s longstanding rock band Buffalo Jones has returned with a new album, Celebrate, which showcases the band’s enduring sharpness and musical prowess. Throughout the album, there is a track called “Cigarette Vending Machine By the Drums” that encapsulates the essence and spirit of the band. Lead vocalist and guitarist Jason Johnson shared an anecdote behind the creation of this song, recounting a peculiar and somewhat surreal experience during a tour with Cracker.
Playing at a rundown venue in Las Vegas on New Year’s Day, Buffalo Jones found themselves in an unusual circumstance. The stage was lackluster, with a cigarette vending machine positioned close to the drums. Despite the less-than-ideal setting, the band persevered, with audience members more interested in purchasing cigarettes than in listening to the music. Drummer Joshua Martin added that it was one of the strangest shows they had ever played, yet somehow fitting for the band.
Reflecting on the experience, Jason Johnson noted that the song inspired by that event was one of the most enjoyable to write. It encapsulated the band’s journey, oscillating between performing at renowned venues and playing for a sparse crowd in Las Vegas. Such experiences have defined Buffalo Jones’ trajectory as a band, characterized by highs and lows in the music industry.
Buffalo Jones will be celebrating the release of Celebrate at The Chameleon, along with supporting acts Silver Treason, Betsy Rogue, and Raj Saint Paul. The album marks a significant milestone for the veteran band, embodying their signature blend of bar rock, alt-country, and melodic power pop. With keyboardist Greg Brandt in the lineup, the band’s sound has evolved, capturing the essence of their live performances.
Recorded locally with Jay Condiotti at J Bones Musicland, Celebrate signifies a departure from Buffalo Jones’ previous studio albums. The band embraced a more raw and authentic approach, focusing on capturing their dynamic sound as a rock and roll group. Embracing their messy and energetic style, the band aimed to deliver a genuine representation of their live performances on the new album.
The collaborative effort on Celebrate underscored the band’s camaraderie and shared vision for their music. Bassist Patrick Pugh, who also designed the album artwork, highlighted the sense of unity and support among the band members during the recording process. Each musician contributed their ideas and talents to create a cohesive and engaging album, emphasizing the importance of collaboration within the band.
Ultimately, Celebrate embodies the spirit of Buffalo Jones, highlighting their journey and collective experience as a band. Their music serves as a reminder that no one is alone in their creative endeavors, fostering a sense of connection and community among band members and listeners alike.
