Cords’ first album features stellar indie pop
The Cords, an emerging band consisting of Grace and Eva Tedeschi, two Scottish teenage sisters from Greenock, have sparked excitement in the U.K. indie music scene with their self-titled debut album. Recorded with producer Jonny Scott of CHVCHES over six days, this album presents a refreshing blend of indie pop and power pop.
“Fabulist” kicks off the album with a vibrant power-pop sound, showcasing solid drumming, captivating guitar work, and compelling vocals. The track’s catchy melody and thoughtful lyrics critiquing pretentious individuals add depth to the song’s overall appeal. “Vera” follows suit with its infectious chorus, while “Bo’s New Haircut” stands out as a brief yet punchy number under 90 seconds. “I’m Not Sad” conveys a message of resilience in under two minutes, combining melancholic vocals with dynamic instrumentals.
In “Yes It’s True,” dreamy vocals intertwined with frenetic guitar and drums create a unique blend reminiscent of Mazzy Star meets Hüsker Dü. “Rather Not Stay” showcases well-constructed musicality with captivating guitar work and spot-on drumming. The closing track, “When You Said Goodbye,” delivers a somber yet emotionally compelling performance by lead vocalist Eva Tedeschi.
Songs like “Just Don’t Know (How to Be You)” channel the band’s power-pop sensibilities, drawing parallels to R.E.M.’s classic sound. The frantic pace of “October” exudes energy and charisma, while the contemplative “Doubt It’s Gonna Change” evokes nostalgia for early Juliana Hatfield material. “You” takes a heavier approach, balancing drums, guitar, and vocals seamlessly. Meanwhile, “Weird Feeling” offers a more relaxed atmosphere, allowing Eva Tedeschi’s vocals to shine alongside jangly guitar riffs and Grace’s skillful drumming.
Concluding the album, “Done with You” features precise drumming and jangly guitar, underscoring the band’s musical cohesion. Overall, The Cords’ debut album is a cohesive and infectious collection of tracks that successfully encapsulate the essence of 1980s and 1990s alt-rock, indie pop, and power pop. With a remarkable level of maturity and creativity, this record showcases the band’s talent and potential in the music industry.
