n 2020 after feeling frustrated about the lack of glass recycling options. The inception of the organization occurred during a casual gathering over a bottle of wine, where the founders realized the environmental impact of discarding glass improperly.

Initially, the students began by collecting glass from friends and manually crushing it. This humble start blossomed into a larger project that now spans the Gulf Coast and aims to convert glass into sand and gravel. The end products are used for various purposes, such as soil amendments, landscaping, gardening, terrazzo flooring, eco-construction, and more. Not only does Glass Half Full help with environmental sustainability through recycling, but it also contributes to projects like coastal restoration and disaster relief.

Birmingham Breadworks, recognizing the importance of environmental sustainability, has collaborated with Glass Half Full to make glass recycling more accessible to the local community. At their location on 7th Ave. S., they have set up a dedicated blue recycling bin for glass next to the trash can. By simply separating glass, removing caps and corks, and rinsing food containers, individuals can easily contribute to the recycling effort. The clear signage provided on the bin reinforces the connection to Glass Half Full and their mission.

Furthermore, Glass Half Full has extended its reach in Birmingham by expanding its glass recycling collections to include businesses and commercial establishments. Since starting monthly curbside glass recycling routes in March 2024, the organization has welcomed over 200 residents who have subscribed to have their glass picked up in front of their homes. Currently, their services cover various neighborhoods in the city, including Downtown, Five Points South, Glen Iris, Highland Park, and more. Residents interested in utilizing the service can do so by signing up online for a one-time setup fee and a monthly subscription.

The collaboration between Birmingham Breadworks and Glass Half Full not only addresses the importance of glass recycling but also emphasizes community involvement and environmental stewardship. Through simple actions like recycling glass bottles and jars, individuals can contribute to reducing waste and supporting sustainable practices. The partnership serves as a reminder of the collective effort needed to protect our planet and nurture our communities. With initiatives like these, the impact of small actions can create a ripple effect towards a more sustainable future for all.
