Jimmie Bones, who has been part of Kid Rock’s band for over two decades, is facing a new challenge after being diagnosed with ALS. This talented piano player, a fixture in the Twisted Brown Trucker band, is set to perform at the Token Lounge alongside his own band, the Snakebit Wanderers.

The journey to his ALS diagnosis began unexpectedly during a simple sushi outing with his family three years ago. Jimmie Bones suddenly realized he was struggling to use his chopsticks, a clear sign that something was amiss. This incident came right after a successful tour with Kid Rock, feeling at the peak of his abilities. The strength in his hands, which were usually powerful, was dwindling. Despite completing multiple tours, he eventually underwent surgery to address what he thought was carpal tunnel or cubital tunnel syndrome.

Post-surgery, his recovery was slower than anticipated, prompting a visit to a neurologist who confirmed his fears. The diagnosis of ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, was a tough blow for Bones. Familiar with the terminal nature of the disease and recalling the swift decline of others like former hockey player Börje Salming, he turned to music for solace, finding comfort in the music of the Beatles during his drive home.

This devastating news has not deterred Bones from continuing to perform. He recently completed what is likely his final tour with Kid Rock, and is now fronting his blues rock band, the Snakebit Wanderers. His upcoming performance at the Token Lounge holds special significance as it marks his return to live shows following his ALS diagnosis in December.

During his time with Kid Rock, Bones has been more than just a bandmate; he’s been family. Kid Rock himself expressed deep admiration and respect for Bones, acknowledging his invaluable contributions to the band, both on and off stage. Describing Bones as the “heart and soul” of the group, Kid Rock highlighted the close bond they share. Bones, in turn, appreciates the unwavering support of Kid Rock and the band during this challenging time.

As he grapples with the impact of ALS on his music career, Bones remains optimistic and determined. His mobility has declined, making certain songs challenging to perform live. Despite these challenges, Bones maintains his musical spirit, adapting to his changing abilities. Watching from the sidelines as his bandmates continue to tour without him will undoubtedly be difficult, but Bones is embracing this new chapter with resilience and grace.

Despite the progressive nature of ALS, Bones remains focused on living each day to the fullest, supported by his family and friends. The cruel nature of the disease may present daily challenges, but Bones is confronting them with strength and determination. Supported by his wife Leigh and surrounded by his children, Bones is embracing the journey ahead with courage and resilience, determined to continue making music for as long as he can.
