Beauty School Dropout gears up to perform at August Hall
BEAUTY SCHOOL DROPOUT, a band blending rock, punk, and pop from Los Angeles, is gearing up to take the stage at August Hall on October 23 as the opening act for letlive in San Francisco. Their upcoming performance follows the release of their new album in September, after having collaborated with various renowned artists and toured with big names like blink-182, jxdn, Warped Tour, and Lollapalooza. The band, consisting of lead vocalist Cole “Colie” Hutzler, bassist Brent “Beepus” Burdett, and producer/guitarist Bardo Novotny, is ready to rock the stage.
I had the chance to catch up with lead singer Colie during their tour to discuss their music and upcoming performance. When asked to describe the band’s sound, Colie revealed it as “ambidextrous, fluid, loud, and fun.” The excitement in bringing their latest album, “WHERE DID ALL THE BUTTERFLIES GO,” to a live audience and honing their craft during this tour has been fulfilling for the band. They have been on the road for the past three months, testing and perfecting their new music for eager listeners.
Their recently released album was produced by Neil Avron, a significant figure in the music industry. Colie spoke highly of the collaboration, emphasizing the learning experience and patience required during the production process. The band was appreciative of Neil’s unique perspective, which contributed to the album’s depth and heartfelt expression. Beauty School Dropout’s relentless touring and creative flow have been integral to their successful year, instilling a sense of fulfillment despite the challenges faced.
Navigating between arena-style performances with blink-182 and intimate club shows, the band has experienced different crowd dynamics and energetic shifts. The preparation for each type of performance varies, with larger venues demanding more extensive preparation. Club audiences provide a raw and visceral energy, while performing in larger spaces often requires proving themselves to unfamiliar listeners. Despite initial skepticism, Beauty School Dropout manages to win over audiences with their lively performances.
Colie explained the origin of a shirt slogan mocking a negative tweet from a concert-goer, highlighting the band’s ability to embrace criticism and turn it into humorous anecdotes. While facing some opposition, they welcome all responses, finding entertainment value in varied reactions. As they gear up for their California shows, the band’s focus is on delivering high-energy performances and connecting with fans on home turf, showcasing their passion for the music and stage presence.
Excited about their new music, Colie expressed enthusiasm for performing songs like “CITY NEVER SLEEPS” and “XXX” live, relishing the opportunity to share fresh tracks with audiences. As they approach the end of their tour run, the band remains dedicated to proving themselves, winning over new fans, and enjoying the thrill of live performances. Beauty School Dropout’s commitment to their craft and love for the stage shine through in their dynamic live shows and genuine connection with their audience.
