Lonely Announce New Album ‘All Monsters’: Listen to “Big Hips”
Julia’s War, an independent label based in Philadelphia, was established a few years ago by Douglas Dulgarian, the founder of They Are Gutting A Body Of Water. The label has rapidly gained prominence in the American indie rock scene. Among their earlier releases is the Guttering EP by Wednesday and MJ Lenderman, and they have recently introduced albums from bands like Joyer, Nyxy Nyx, and Total Wife. Their latest addition is Mx Lonely, a New York-based group set to release their debut full-length album, All Monsters, next year.
The members of Mx Lonely first crossed paths at AA meetings, and the band’s name, chosen by singer and synth player Rae Haas, was inspired by their experiences with sleep paralysis. Initially known as v0idb0ys, they released a demo under this name in 2019. Adapting to the challenges posed by the pandemic, they rebranded themselves as Mx Lonely and released a couple of EPs. Their lead single, “Big Hips,” has a disorienting quality to it. The verses harken back to the angular indie rock of the ’90s, while the chorus erupts into a fuzzy, raucous explosion, with Haas boldly declaring about having big hips as a boy.
Reflecting on the track, Haas shares that “Big Hips” serves as a self-deprecating celebration of youthful masculinity, specifically addressing the unique challenges faced by transgender individuals during puberty. The song explores the experience of feeling uncomfortable and objectified as one’s body undergoes changes, transforming this dysphoria into a lighthearted joke akin to how young boys boast about their genitalia. Director Owen Lehman’s video for “Big Hips” employs a fisheye lens aesthetic, adding a fun visual element to the song.
