Black Country, New Road Embraces Constant Change
In today’s music scene, where genres and categories are meticulously defined by algorithms, Black Country, New Road stands out as an enigma. Known as BC,NR, the British rock group has captured attention and adoration since their emergence in 2018. Renowned for their unique sound, insightful lyrics, and intricate compositions, they quickly gained a devoted following and critical acclaim.
After the release of their Mercury Prize-nominated debut album “For the first time” in 2021 and their second album “Ants from Up There” in 2022, Black Country, New Road faced a pivotal moment in their creative journey. Lead vocalist Isaac Wood made the decision to depart from the band, but the group opted not to fill his role. Instead, they redistributed lead vocal duties among existing members, including bassist Tyler Hyde, saxophonist Lewis Evans, and keyboardist May Kershaw, with Luke Mark on guitar, Georgia Ellery on violin and mandolin, and Charlie Wayne on drums completing the lineup. The outcome of this restructuring was showcased in their live album “Live at Bush Hall” in 2023, revealing a lush, cinematic fusion of chamber pop, progressive folk, and post-rock, enriched by the new vocal arrangements.
Following their debut at Fuji Rock in 2022 and subsequent solo tour in 2023, BC,NR is set to return to Japan in December. This tour will showcase their latest studio album, “Forever Howlong,” marking their first full-length release as a six-piece ensemble.
May Kershaw, the band’s keyboardist and vocalist, has a special connection to Japan as she is half Japanese. She reflects on her childhood in Shikoku and annual visits to her grandfather in Ozu before moving to Cambridge, England. A skilled pianist trained at the Guildhall School of Music & Art, Kershaw met her bandmates in Cambridge around 2014, where they bonded over their shared love for music in a close-knit community.
Drummer Charlie Wayne, a Cambridge native, reminisces about the band’s unforgettable performance at the Fuji Rock Festival in 2022, highlighting the unique concert culture in Japan characterized by attentive yet reserved audiences. Despite their global success and millions of streams, BC,NR remains grounded, choosing not to engage extensively on social media as they prioritize their creative output over online presence.
The band draws inspiration from a diverse range of musical influences, with each member adding their unique touch to BC,NR’s evolving sound. Their latest album, “Forever Howlong,” incorporates a brighter, more whimsical atmosphere with rich baroque instrumentation and imaginative lyrical themes. Drawing from genres like alternative and contemporary folk, ’70s pop, and intricate studio arrangements reminiscent of The Beach Boys, the album reflects the band’s fluid and explorative creative process.
Instead of adhering to a strict plan, BC,NR lets the music guide them, shaping their identity through the songs it reveals along the way. As they continue to push boundaries and challenge musical conventions, Black Country, New Road remains a captivating force in the contemporary music landscape, defying categorization and inviting listeners into a world of sonic exploration and emotive storytelling.
