Motley Crue Guitarist John 5 Questions Rock Hall Snub Despite Decades of Eligibility
John 5, the talented guitarist who joined Motley Crue’s touring group in late 2022, expressed his confusion as to why the band has not yet been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame despite being eligible for nearly two decades. Having qualified for induction almost 20 years ago, John 5 believes that Motley Crue deserves this recognition. He shared his thoughts in an interview with American Musical Supply, stating, “I have no idea. But if it was up to me, I’d have them in one day after the 25 years. I think they should be in, and I think it’d be wonderful. They deserve it so much.” He emphasized the importance of the band’s influence on countless musicians and bands, which he believes should be recognized by the Hall of Fame.
In order to be considered for induction into the Rock Hall, bands must have released their first album at least 25 years prior. Motley Crue met this criteria back in 2007, yet they have not received the coveted call to join the prestigious ranks of inductees. The 2025 class includes renowned artists such as Bad Company, Joe Cocker, Chubby Checker, Soundgarden, White Stripes, Cyndi Lauper, and Outkast, who will be honored for their contributions to the music industry. The induction process involves a vote by approximately 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry professionals, with at least half of the voters needing to approve the nomination. Each year, between five to seven performers are welcomed into the Hall of Fame.
Nikki Sixx, Motley Crue’s bassist, expressed his skepticism towards the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in a Facebook post from 2015, stating, “The only award I look forward to getting is the one I will probably decline, and that’s the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.” He criticized the institution, claiming it to be a “fixed old-boy network” that has lost sight of what truly matters in music, such as art, songwriting craft, lyrics, and influence.
John 5’s journey with Motley Crue began amidst legal troubles within the band, as Mick Mars sued the other members, Vince Neil, Nikki Sixx, and Tommy Lee, alleging financial misconduct. Online critics targeted the new guitarist, questioning his playing style, to which he bravely responded in defense of his artistry.
