New choir provides support for Saint John cancer patients and caregivers
A new choir in Saint John is offering a sense of community for individuals facing cancer and those who care for them. This choir, called Healing Voices, was started by Kelly Galbraith, a former CBC Music producer and choir director. The purpose of the choir is to bring together people who have cancer, have survived it, or are caregivers for those with the disease.
Samantha Keays, a 29-year-old who was diagnosed with breast cancer last February, found solace in music during her own health journey. When she learned about Healing Voices, she knew she had to be a part of it. Keays emphasized the importance of connecting with others who have gone through similar experiences. She highlighted how lonely and isolating a cancer diagnosis can feel, especially when living in a new community without a strong support system. Joining the Healing Voices choir provided her with a sense of understanding and camaraderie.
Heather Purcell, another member of the choir, shared her experience of being diagnosed with ovarian and endometrial cancer and finding comfort in music. Hearing about Healing Voices through another choir she was a part of, Purcell recognized the importance of community during challenging times. Singing has helped her navigate the emotional rollercoaster that often accompanies a cancer diagnosis. Purcell’s involvement in the choir serves as a powerful outlet for her to express herself and connect with others who can relate to her struggles.
For Olivia Donovan, being a caregiver for her husband, Alvin, who is battling pancreatic cancer, led her to join Healing Voices. Donovan expressed the unique bond formed between individuals facing cancer and their caregivers. She acknowledged the difficulty of being part of a club one never wanted to join but finding solace in the shared experiences of others. Singing with the choir allows Donovan to not only support her husband but also prioritize her well-being and connect with individuals who understand the challenges she faces.
By creating a space for individuals to share their stories, experiences, and emotions through music, Healing Voices serves as a beacon of hope, friendship, and solidarity. The choir rehearsals aim to unite voices in harmony, providing a sense of togetherness and understanding that transcends words. The upcoming concert on February 15 at St. Mark’s United Church will not only showcase the musical talents of its members but also celebrate the courage, resilience, and strength of those impacted by cancer. Through the power of music, Healing Voices shines a light on the beauty that can emerge from facing adversity together.
