Portland Label Honors Chicano Rock Music
In a casual setting over drinks, musicians Shorty Delgado, James Jones, and Joshua Josué pondered their place in the music world. Their unique fusion of sounds didn’t fit into traditional genres like country or Americana, and the inclusion of Spanish elements set them apart from the Tejano music scene. Out of this conversation, Electric Chololand Records was born as an independent record label dedicated to showcasing Chicano musicians, their stories, and cultural heritage, with a focus on Chicano Rock.
Shorty Delgado leads the label, which officially launched in 2024. Josué, an artist under the label, recently released an album titled “Broadcast to the Surf Ballroom,” paying tribute to musical icons Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens. This album features demos and unfinished songs inspired by these legendary artists who have influenced Josué’s musical journey.
Delgado and Josué join a program to discuss the label and its mission further. In addition to sharing insights into the creation of Electric Chololand Records, they also delve into Josué’s music style and experiences. The show includes live performances by artists like Ben Rice, Nick Skalberg, Marilyn Darrel, and Yoshi Sheetz, offering a glimpse into the diverse talent represented by the label.
“Think Out Loud®” airs live every day at noon and rebroadcasts in the evening at 8 p.m. If you have thoughts on the topics discussed on the show or suggestions for future discussions, you can connect with the team via Facebook, email, or voicemail.
The birth of Electric Chololand Records is a testament to the creative vision and shared passion of these artists to carve out a space for Chicano music within the industry. Through their dedication to preserving and celebrating their cultural heritage through music, Delgado, Jones, and Josué are paving the way for a new generation of Chicano musicians to showcase their talents and stories on a broader platform.
This initiative not only highlights the unique blend of sounds and influences within Chicano Rock but also serves as a beacon for aspiring artists looking to explore their cultural roots through music. By providing a supportive and inclusive environment for Chicano musicians to showcase their artistry, Electric Chololand Records is poised to make a significant impact in the music industry and beyond.
