Gnarls Barkley Returns After 18 Years with New Music and Album
Gnarls Barkley, the iconic duo of producer Danger Mouse and singer/rapper Cee-Lo Green, has made a significant return after an 18-year hiatus. Their new single, “Pictures,” has been released ahead of the upcoming launch of their third and final album on March 6, available through 10k Projects/Atlantic, Atlanta.
Green shared that the single “Pictures” was inspired by memories of Atlanta’s MARTA public transit line, noting that it symbolizes a return to their roots. He emphasized that the essence of Gnarls Barkley has always been about self-discovery, capturing the spectrum of emotions from sweet to sad to strange. Green described it as an exploration of the universe and the inner adventures one experiences.
The inspiration behind the single came from a poignant childhood experience of Green’s. He recalled a middle school principal who consistently dismissed him every Friday, prompting him to embark on solitary train rides from 8am to 2:30pm during his eighth-grade year. The essence of being in transit, captured in the song’s lyrics, mirrors the feeling of witnessing a motion picture passing by.
The duo burst onto the music scene in 2006 with their multi-platinum album “St. Elsewhere,” which featured the chart-topping single “Crazy.” Subsequently, they followed up with the release of “The Odd Couple” in 2008 and performed over 100 live shows, often in elaborate costumes. Despite their success, they took a prolonged break as Green pursued solo projects, reunited with Goodie Mob, worked as a coach on The Voice, and authored a memoir. In parallel, Danger Mouse ventured into new musical endeavors, forming Broken Bells with James Mercer and producing for a diverse range of artists.
The album “Atlanta” is set to include tracks such as “Tomorrow Died Today,” “I Amnesia,” “Pictures,” “Line Dance,” “Turn Your Heart Back On,” “Let Me Be,” “Cyberbully (Yayo),” “Perfect Time,” “Sweet Evil,” “Boy Genius,” “The Be Be King,” “Sorry,” and “Accept It.” Gnarls Barkley enthusiasts can anticipate a blend of nostalgia and innovation in this long-awaited musical installment.
The return of Gnarls Barkley marks a significant moment in the music industry, as fans eagerly anticipate the unique sound and storytelling that the duo is renowned for. With their upcoming album release and the debut of the single “Pictures,” Gnarls Barkley continues to push boundaries and captivate audiences with their distinct artistic vision and musical prowess.
