The concept of a teacher rapping might induce a cringe-worthy reaction from most individuals, don’t you think? It’s an A for effort, but definitely falls into the awkward category. However, Mr. Reed managed to amaze his students with an engaging rap infused with rhymes that aimed to energize his new fourth-grade class for the upcoming school year. The music video titled “Welcome to the Fourth Grade” quickly gained popularity and went viral in August 2016.

Dr. Reed’s passion for rap and the overwhelming excitement generated by his video inspired him to incorporate music into the school curriculum as much as possible. Throughout the year, he encouraged students to embrace their creativity and musical talents, leading some to collaborate on creating their music video, which was even featured on local news channels.

To this day, Mr. Reed continues to spread his motivational message through a new video series developed in collaboration with teachers nationwide. Supported by Old Navy, this video series aims to launch the ONward! cause platform by showcasing several original songs written and performed by teachers about guiding the next generation to greater heights. These songs celebrate the exciting aspects of school that should arouse students’ enthusiasm for the academic year.

Among these contributions is Mr. Reed’s own “Welcome Back to School,” serving as a dynamic introduction to the fifth-grade students at LEARN Campbell elementary in Chicago, where he will be teaching this fall. Another notable contribution comes from Beth Fortune of Washington Middle School in Seattle, who collaborated with three students to produce a charming country tune titled “Be Myself,” emphasizing the importance of staying true to one’s unique self.

These teachers effortlessly demonstrate how rapping and singing can exude coolness while also emphasizing the significance of embracing individuality. The start of a new school year should be a time for students to showcase their uniqueness rather than conforming to societal expectations. By accepting and celebrating one’s authentic self, students not only become exceptional learners but are also poised to become future leaders. So, whether it’s rapping skills, impressive spelling abilities, or a penchant for flamboyant neon green socks, it is these distinctive traits that truly make individuals unforgettable.
