Campbell Library to open on May 9 following construction delays
After experiencing delays in November, the Santa Clara County Library District has decided to officially open the new Campbell Library on Saturday, May 9. The construction of the two-story library building located at 77 Harrison Ave. has been completed, along with the landscaping. The finishing touches on the interior work are being finalized, and new furniture, books, and equipment are being moved in by the library staff.
The City of Campbell initially delayed the library’s opening to receive a $500,000 grant from Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE) to construct an all-electric facility. However, this modification contributed to expediting the grand opening. This new 24,000-square-foot library boasts floor-to-ceiling windows that allow ample natural light. The upper floor houses a versatile community space called The Overlook, situated between the community room and the children’s section, offering an unobstructed view of Orchard Green. Additionally, there are meeting rooms available for public reservation on this floor.
The initiative to fund this project originated from Measure O, a $50 million bond measure sanctioned by Campbell voters in 2018 to revamp the old library and build a new police operations building and dispatch center. A portion of these funds totaling $20.5 million was allocated to the library project, supplemented by the SVCE grant and a $4.7 million California State Library infrastructure grant. The library district chipped in approximately $510,000 toward interior amenities and programming, while the Friends of the Campbell Library raised an additional $250,000.
Campbell City Manager Brian Loventhal expressed, “The new Campbell Library is a testament to the years of collaboration between our community and the Santa Clara County Library District.” Its opening marks an exciting milestone for the residents and library enthusiasts, ushering in a state-of-the-art facility that promises to serve as a cultural hub and community center for all who visit. With its modern design and innovative features, the new Campbell Library is set to become a cherished landmark and hub of learning and exploration for years to come.
