Soft No releases new EP with debut single “Oxford Street” now available
Soft No is currently in the midst of creating a new EP, titled “Super Neutral,” and has recently released its first single called “Oxford Street.” This indie quintet from Philadelphia, PA, is taking a unique approach with this upcoming EP compared to its previous work. The band engaged in collaborative writing sessions to produce a five-song collection that is a departure from its debut EP.
The new EP, set to be released on local Philly indie label Abandon Everything Records, features a blend of various genres such as alt-rock, punk rock, post-hardcore, post-punk, and emo. Lead guitarist and co-lead vocalist Austin Lotz explains that the band took a more organic approach to songwriting this time around by incorporating everyone’s input and allowing the music to flow naturally. Rhythm guitarist Scott Signorino notes that each member of the band is more present on this EP, contributing to a more cohesive and collaborative sound.
The title of the EP, “Super Neutral,” is a nod to the band’s attempt to keep the peace amid the politically charged climate of today’s world. Despite its peaceful moniker, the music on the EP is anything but placid. Instead, it offers an emotional and musically diverse experience that showcases Soft No’s growth and versatility as artists.
The lead single from the EP, “Oxford Street,” has a nostalgic and urgent feel reminiscent of early 2000s emo bands like The Promise Ring and The Get Up Kids. The song features layered synth textures, expressive vocals, melodic guitar parts, and a catchy pop structure. Drummer Jonathan Martello penned the music for the track, which pushed lead vocalist Lannutti out of her comfort zone to write a deeply personal narrative about a night out and a friend who passed away.
Lannutti’s lyrics in “Oxford Street” are poignant and evocative, capturing the essence of a blurry, emotional moment. Lines like “Saw you on the street last night/A blurry halo of orange light/And I can’t see straight but I remember/You said I could do so much better” showcase her lyrical prowess and emotional depth in storytelling. The song is a blend of emotional rawness and catchy melodies, creating a resonant and vivid listening experience for audiences.
