Chvrches premiere new song “Conman” at benefit for Teenage Cancer Trust by Robert Smith
This year, Robert Smith has taken over the reins from Robert Daltrey for the Teenage Cancer Trust benefit concerts held at London’s prestigious Royal Albert Hall. The iconic frontman of The Cure has taken on the role of “cureator,” curating a stellar lineup that includes acts such as Garbage, Wolf Alice, Manic Street Preachers, Elbow, and My Bloody Valentine. The recent show featured performances by MBV and Chvrches, with the latter surprising fans by debuting a new track titled “Conman.”
Chvrches and Robert Smith have a history of collaboration, with Smith making a guest appearance on Chvrches’ 2021 track “How Not To Drown.” The two acts have shared the stage on multiple occasions over the years, showcasing a strong musical connection. Prior to performing “Conman,” Chvrches lead singer Lauren Mayberry shared with the audience, “I promise I’m not just indoors watching TV all the time; we have been working on a new record. Since this is a special evening, we wanted to share a track from that record with you all. So please be kind to us, as we have never played this in front of a live audience before.”
Chvrches’ most recent album, “Screen Violence,” was released in 2021. Since then, Mayberry has ventured into the world of solo touring and released her debut solo album titled “Vicious Creature.” Additionally, band members Martin Doherty and Jonny Scott, who also serves as a touring member, have embarked on a new musical project called the Leaving, with their debut album “Ultimate Buzz” set for release next month.
In recent months, Chvrches has treated fans to covers of classics such as Robert Palmer’s “Addicted To Love” and The Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights” for the Hulu series “Tell Me Lies.” These tracks were recorded during the sessions for Chvrches’ highly anticipated fifth album. The band also delighted fans at the recent concert by performing live renditions of tracks from “Screen Violence” including “Lullabies” and “Nightmares.”
