English Professors to Host Event at Central Michigan University
A free concert featuring the rock band Daryl and the Beans, composed of Department of English Professors Jeffrey Bean, Darrin Doyle, and Robert Fanning, will be held on Thursday, April 16 in Anspach Hall room 161. The band will be launching their second album, “Hunk Alert,” during the event. The concert is set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. with a performance by local indie songwriter and Mount Pleasant High School senior, Magdalena Fanning, followed by Daryl and the Beans at 8 p.m.
Daryl and the Beans have been performing for 15 years and have a tradition of holding one concert a year in Mount Pleasant as part of their ongoing World Domination Tour. The band, typically a 3-piece, includes Bean on guitar and bass, Fanning on guitar, and Doyle on guitar, banjo, and percussion, with all three members contributing vocals. While the mysterious fourth member, Professor Matt Roberson, remains an enigmatic presence in the band’s identity, rumors speculate that he may be the elusive Daryl after whom the band is named.
Recent additions to the band include drummer Simon Doyle, Darrin’s son and the producer of “Hunk Alert.” However, with Simon moving to Chicago, CMU student Juice Legend will be taking over drumming duties for the upcoming concert. The band is enthusiastic about showcasing Juice’s talents and the energy he brings to their performances.
“Hunk Alert” was recorded in 2025 at Spare Blanket Studios and features seven original tracks, as well as three covers showcasing the band’s unique reinterpretation of popular songs. Notable on the album is “Alma Mater,” a heavy-metal rendition of CMU’s 1927 anthem, which resonates with fans of the band for its high-energy vibe. Additionally, the album features several surprises that will be unveiled during the live concert.
Magdalena Fanning, the opening act for Daryl and the Beans, is releasing her first EP this June and is excited to share her original music with the audience. The band’s second album, “Hunk Alert,” was quietly released on April 4 and is now available on various music platforms. Fans are encouraged to grab a CD copy, which the band will happily sign for an added touch of collectibility.
