Neil Young’s latest album features three songs he wrote over six decades ago
Neil Young is back at it again, just under a year after the release of his last album with Chrome Hearts. In a recent message on his Neil Young Archives website titled “Moon To Moon,” Young revealed that he and the band hit the studio at Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La in Malibu to work on a new project. This upcoming album, which is yet to be named, features a mix of five fresh tracks and three ancient unreleased songs from as far back as 1963 when Young was part of the Squires. The discovery of these forgotten tunes came to light when one of them resurfaced in Young’s mind during the studio sessions.
In addition to the upcoming album, Young also mentioned the release of “As Time Explodes,” a live album capturing recordings from Chrome Hearts’ tours across Europe and the United States last year. This album was recently released for Record Store Day.
In his message to fans, Young described the creative process behind the new album, sharing his excitement about its completion. He expressed how grateful he felt for the gift of music and the joy it brings him. The album’s inception coincided with the phases of the moon, with both the songwriting and recording sessions beginning on a full moon and eventually wrapping up on another full moon. Young recounted how the process of creating new music spontaneously took off one morning after waking up with a rush of inspiration that persisted over the following days leading up to the recording sessions at Shangri-La.
The Chrome Hearts and Young set out to record five new songs, which were quickly followed by a rediscovery of three unreleased songs from over six decades ago. The unexpected findings of these old tracks added a touch of nostalgia to the album’s eclectic mix of old and new compositions. Young expressed his eagerness for fans to listen to the album, anticipating that it will be available shortly.
With the announcement of the upcoming studio album and the recent release of the live album, Young’s creative output continues to captivate audiences. His heartfelt message to fans reflects his profound appreciation for the art of music and the collaborative spirit that drives his work with Chrome Hearts. Stay tuned for more updates as this new album, potentially featuring a moon-related title, gets ready for release by the end of the year.
