Video footage depicts suspect shooting police officer at correspondents’ dinner, says top prosecutor

Authorities recently released video footage showcasing the suspect in a shooting incident during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. Allen faces three federal charges, including attempted assassination of the president, transportation of a firearm across state lines with intent to commit a felony, and discharging a firearm in a crime of violence. Despite the Secret Service officer firing multiple rounds, none of them hit Allen, who was reportedly unharmed. The injured officer, wearing a protective vest, was discharged from the hospital shortly after the shooting.

The suspect, a California-based teacher, was apprehended and is now in custody pending further legal proceedings. Surveillance footage from the hotel shows him walking around, pointing at something, and moving through the premises, all while carrying a shotgun. Allen’s actions in the footage suggest premeditated planning, as it was revealed that he had traveled to Washington from Los Angeles with intent to target members of the Trump administration.

Court documents indicate that Allen, armed with a shotgun, a pistol, and knives, checked into the hotel where the correspondents’ dinner was scheduled to take place. He took a photo of himself dressed in a formal outfit with a shoulder holster and ammunition bag. The shooting occurred at a security checkpoint just above the dinner venue, carried out by Allen as he rushed through with his gun.

Prosecutors mentioned that Allen had written a manifesto detailing his intentions to cause harm at the event. He was subsequently arrested after the shooting incident and will face a preliminary hearing in the upcoming days. Despite his legal team’s request to change his detention conditions, the judge denied the request, keeping Allen in a restrictive cell.
