The imminent prospect of plunging into an AI-dominated future is no longer a matter of if, but rather of when. This notion appears to have inspired the title of Panda Bear and Sonic Boom’s upcoming album, A ? Of WHEN, which the duo has recently unveiled. Serving as a follow-up to 2022’s Reset, this new release will not be made available for streaming to enable the artists to place more emphasis on genuine human interactions in order to regain a sense of normalcy.

In a joint statement shared on social media, Noah Lennox and Pete Kember articulated their sentiments: “Change is both exhilarating and daunting. It encompasses both gradual alterations and monumental transformations, leading to highs and lows influenced by the overwhelming nature of constant connection. What was once perceived as AI-generated messiness is now taking a calculated turn towards a structured path. We are deviating slightly from the norm, embracing a more rock ‘n’ roll approach rather than resorting to the endless scrolling and clicking prevalent in today’s digital landscape.”

Their intention to re-establish authentic connections with their audience is clearly evident in the recent release of their “Graveyard”/”Lucky Charm” 7-inch vinyl exclusively obtainable from local record stores, devoid of any streaming services, videos, or excessive online presence. Moving forward, Lennox and Kember are shifting their focus towards traditional mediums such as radio broadcasts, live performances, listening parties, Q&A sessions, and face-to-face interactions, all aimed at cultivating a tangible sense of community that feels more grounded and meaningful.

This offline initiative, aptly summed up as IRL (in real life) over URL (online), invites fans to engage with the artists beyond the confines of social media and meet them in person within the physical realm. The title track from the forthcoming album, exuding a refreshing Pet Sounds vibe, is currently accessible for download to those who purchase the album itself. The official tracklist includes captivating titles like “Never givin’ in,” “Lucky Charm,” “Revive him,” “Something like dreaming,” “A ? of WHEN,” “Pray to you,” “Be the bridge,” “Like a moth to the flame,” “Somethin’ that lasts,” and “Graveyard.”

Slated for release on 7/10 via Domino Records, A ? Of WHEN can now be pre-ordered, marking the beginning of a new era in Panda Bear and Sonic Boom’s musical journey as they steer away from the digital noise and immerse themselves in the raw essence of genuine human connection.
