Amazon Prime Video has recently made the decision to cancel or announce the end of a number of shows, including two animated series, a spinoff of the popular superhero show The Boys, and a revival of the beloved Stargate series. At the same time, the streaming service has renewed seven other shows, such as Young Sherlock, Jury Duty, Reacher, Off Campus, Bloodaxe, Cross, and a prequel to Legally Blonde titled Elle.

One of the canceled shows, Kevin, an adult animated sitcom co-created by Aubrey Plaza, has garnered a score of 82 percent from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 60 percent critic score. Plaza expressed her disappointment in an Instagram post, mentioning that the show’s cancellation was premature and drew comparisons to her experience on Parks and Recreation. Kevin follows the story of a cat named Kevin who moves into an animal rescue in New York City after his human owners split up, with Jason Schwartzman, Whoopi Goldberg, and Plaza herself lending their voices to characters in the show.

Gen V, a spinoff of The Boys, was also canceled after two seasons despite receiving positive reviews from critics, earning a 94 percent critic score and a 73 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The show is set at Godolkin University, a college for young superheroes, and focuses on a group of students striving to become the next generation of heroes while uncovering dark secrets of the institution. The executive producers, Eric Kripke and Evan Goldberg, announced that the characters from Gen V would continue their stories in The Boys Season 5 and other projects within the franchise.

Another casualty of Amazon Prime Video’s recent cancellations is The Runarounds, a musical drama series with a 90 percent audience score and a 67 percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. The show, created by Jonas Pate of Outer Banks fame, revolves around a group of high school graduates forming a rock band and navigating the music industry, relationships, ambition, and life post-graduation. While loosely inspired by a real band formed during casting for Outer Banks, The Runarounds will not see a second season.

Furthermore, Hazbin Hotel, an animated musical comedy series that received scores of 81 percent from the audience and 84 percent from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, will conclude after its fifth season. The show follows Charlie Morningstar, the princess of Hell, as she establishes a hotel to rehabilitate sinners and offer them a chance at redemption. Melissa Wolfe, head of animation at Amazon MGM Studios, praised the show for pushing the boundaries of adult animation, while creator Vivienne Medrano expressed gratitude for Prime Video’s support and enthusiasm for fans to witness the story’s epic conclusion.

Lastly, the planned revival of Stargate was canceled by Prime Video before production, citing concerns over limited appeal beyond the existing fanbase. This decision was met with disappointment from fans and veteran writer of the Stargate franchise, Joseph Mallozzi, who expressed regret over the show not moving forward. The Stargate franchise originally began with a film in 1994 and expanded into multiple television series, with Prime Video now opting to put the planned revival on hold.
