Just released to mark the 50th anniversary of the iconic tracks “American Girl” and “Breakdown,” fans of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers can enjoy extended and newly mixed versions of the songs. These renditions have been remixed from the original multitrack tapes in Hi-Res and Dolby Atmos and are now available through digital outlets.

“American Girl” and “Breakdown” were both featured on Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers’ first self-titled album, which debuted in November 1976. “Breakdown” achieved significant success as Petty’s initial top-40 hit, reaching #40 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Despite “American Girl” not gaining traction in the U.S. upon its initial release, it emerged as one of Petty’s most beloved tunes and is frequently cited as one of the finest rock songs ever recorded. Notably, “American Girl” holds significance as the last song Tom Petty played live during his performance at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles in September 2017, merely a week before his untimely passing on October 2, 2017.

This release showcases the enduring influence of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, underscoring the timelessness and power of their music. By reviving classics like “American Girl” and “Breakdown,” the Tom Petty estate ensures that fans and new listeners alike can continue to appreciate the band’s iconic sound for years to come. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience these newly mixed versions of timeless tracks that have left an indelible mark on rock music history.
