Celebrating 60 years since The Rolling Stones’ ‘Aftermath’ debuted on Billboard 200

Today marks the significant 60th anniversary of a momentous event in rock and roll music history – the debut of The Rolling Stones’ iconic album, Aftermath, on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States. July 9 holds a special place in the music world, with several noteworthy milestones in the industry occurring on this date over the years. It was 71 years ago today that “Rock Around the Clock” by Bill Haley & His Comets climbed to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Pop chart.

Also on this date, 64 years ago, the legendary Bob Dylan recorded his timeless classic, “Blowin’ in the Wind,” in New York City. Two years following this, The Animals achieved chart-topping success with “The House of the Rising Sun” reaching No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart. For Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones, July 9 has a particular significance, as it marks the 60th anniversary of the debut of their fourth studio album, Aftermath, on the Billboard 200, at position No. 117.

Aftermath, which was recorded by The Rolling Stones in March 1966 and released on April 15 of the same year, featured hit tracks like “Out of Time,” “Mother’s Little Helper,” “Lady Jane,” and “Under My Thumb,” with the latter peaking at different positions on various music charts. The British edition of the album notably included “Out of Time,” a track that was later covered by Chris Farlowe and reached No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart for the week of July 28. The American version of the album boasted the hit single “Paint It Black,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the weeks of June 11 and 18.

Following its debut on the Billboard 200, Aftermath climbed to No. 2 for the week of August 13, 1966. The only album ranking above Aftermath that same week was The Beatles’ Yesterday and Today. After holding the No. 2 position for an additional week, the album subsequently fell to No. 7 on the chart.
