Irish Modern Dance Theatre will perform at Dance Limerick again
Irish Modern Dance Theatre is set to make a return to Dance Limerick with a new production titled “Begin Anywhere,” created by acclaimed choreographer John Scott and Tony-nominated composer Mel Mercier. The inspiration behind this innovative work draws from the legendary American choreographer Merce Cunningham and composer John Cage. By seamlessly integrating contemporary dance with live music, the performance promises to be dynamic and bold.
Having previously collaborated extensively with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Scott partners with Mercier, an original musician in Cunningham and Cage’s Roaratorio, to craft a unique dance experience. Audiences are invited to enjoy Four Solos by Merce Cunningham during the show, including iconic pieces like Changeling (1957), Solo (1975), and excerpts from RainForest (1968) and Travelogue (1977). These solos will be performed by Morgan Amirah Burns, François Malbranque, and Boris Charrion, accompanied by the music of renowned composer John King, in collaboration with the Merce Cunningham Trust.
The main event of the evening, “Begin Anywhere,” will feature six international dancers hailing from the USA, France, Poland, Brazil, and Ireland. Their performances will encompass a wide range of movements, from athletic and sweeping to stately and refined, set against the backdrop of music spanning from Sean Nós to electronic sounds performed by four of Ireland’s top musicians.
John Scott shared his excitement for the upcoming production, stating, “Following our sold-out premiere in New York, we are thrilled to bring these works home. This is our best production yet—knockout dancing with a joyous energy somewhere between an Irish céilí and a rock festival.” The production is designed to captivate audiences with its vibrant energy and artistry.
