Local Cleveland band Violet Ray has announced the upcoming release of their new skate-themed album titled ‘This Is Skate Rock.’ The band, led by singer-guitarist Billy Somerville, has a deep-rooted connection to skateboarding and has incorporated this passion into their music. With each song on the album dedicated to skating, Violet Ray aims to bring the skateboarding community to the forefront through their music.

In a recent phone interview, Somerville shared his inspiration behind creating an album centered around skateboarding. Being an avid skateboarder since 1988 and hailing from a former skate rock band, Somerville’s dedication to the skateboarding culture is evident in Violet Ray’s new project. The band’s goal is to provide skateboarders with music that resonates with their experiences and passions, a niche they feel is underrepresented in the hardcore punk and grindcore genres.

The album’s lead track, ‘Phillips 66,’ pays tribute to skater Jeff Phillips, a figure highly regarded by Somerville. Detailing Phillips’ tragic life story and his impact on skateboarding, the song captures the essence of Phillips’ fearless and unconventional approach to the sport. Somerville’s admiration for Phillips’ unique style and commitment to skateboarding shines through in the raw energy of the track, setting the tone for the rest of the album.

Recorded in just two days at Bad Racket in Euclid, the album was a collaborative effort with recording engineer James Kananen. The band’s dedication to their craft and tight musical cohesion allowed them to complete the recording efficiently. Drawing inspiration from punk icons like Black Flag, Violet Ray brings a blend of originality and authenticity to their music, setting them apart from conventional punk rock bands.

Among the album’s highlights are tracks like ‘Master of Disaster,’ inspired by skater/punk rocker Duane Peters, and ‘Brookpark Rd.,’ which recounts the punk rock scene of the late 20th century in Cleveland. ‘Brookpark Rd.’ serves as a homage to the band’s roots and captures the spirit of rebellion and camaraderie that defined their early years in the local punk scene. The album also features tracks like ‘All Hail Cardiel’ and ‘Head Bongo,’ which incorporate skateboarding terminology and pay homage to influential figures in the skateboarding community.

Violet Ray’s upcoming live performance at CODA on April 11 will feature a full album showcase of ‘This Is Skate Rock’ along with songs from their debut album. The band’s electrifying stage presence and musical prowess promise an energetic and memorable show for fans. As Violet Ray continues to celebrate skate culture through their music, they aim to carve out a unique space in the punk rock landscape, showcasing their passion for skateboarding and music in equal measure.
