Matisyahu has announced the upcoming release of a new song titled “Basi L’gani,” which delves into his return to writing music and the profound connection he feels with Israel. In an exclusive interview with The Algemeiner, the Jewish reggae artist shared his excitement about the song’s release and the inspiration behind it.

The new track, set to be released on Thursday, holds a special significance for Matisyahu and the Orthodox Chabad movement. The release date corresponds with the day Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn passed away in 1950, as well as the day Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson assumed leadership of Chabad. These dates, along with his youngest son’s third birthday coinciding with the Hebrew calendar date, mark the perfect opportunity for Matisyahu to unveil “Basi L’gani.”

The song draws inspiration from a Hasidic discourse written by Rabbi Schneersohn called “Basi L’Gani,” meaning “Enter my Garden” in English. Matisyahu revealed that he wrote the track nearly two years ago, prior to the Israel-Hamas conflict, but decided to wait until the right moment to release it. This song is the first in a series that he recorded before the war and intends to share with his audience.

The lyrics of “Basi L’gani” draw heavily from the original Hasidic discourse, echoing messages of unity and spiritual growth. Matisyahu’s moving vocals open with an invitation: “Come enter my garden/ my sister/ my bride. It’s been a long coming/ and you been out all night. Rise in the morning/shine your light.” Throughout the song, he explores themes of guidance, sanctuary, and support, emphasizing the importance of finding solace and direction in challenging times.

Matisyahu, born as Matthew Paul Miller, has always been known for infusing his music with messages of peace, hope, and his deep connection to Israel. His earlier songs like “King Without a Crown” and “One Day” reflect his longing for peace and unity, while his recent tracks such as “Ascent” and “The Fathers Live” address the rise of antisemitism and the resilience of the Jewish people.

Despite a hiatus in songwriting during the Gaza conflict, Matisyahu is eager to dive back into creating music. He expressed his desire to release music more frequently, sharing his intention to unveil a new song every three weeks. The upcoming tracks are expected to be more introspective and intense, drawing inspiration from the current events and personal experiences that have shaped his worldview.

During The Algemeiner‘s recent gala, where Matisyahu received the “Warrior For Truth” award, he spoke passionately about his renewed connection to his Jewish heritage. Following the harrowing events of the Hamas attack in 2023, he has reconnected with his faith and become more vocal in addressing social and political issues.

Matisyahu’s experiences during the war, including visits to Israel and interactions with affected families, have deeply impacted his music and his focus as an artist. He has performed benefit concerts, met with hostages’ families, and filmed music videos in affected communities, all in an effort to raise awareness and show support for those affected by conflict.

His dedication to Israel and the Jewish people shines through in his music and actions, highlighting the importance of unity, resilience, and faith in times of adversity. Through his upcoming song “Basi L’gani” and future releases, Matisyahu continues to spread messages of hope, solidarity, and strength, using his music as a platform for social change and awareness.
