Patrick Wolf has shared news about his upcoming album, called Crying The Neck. This highly anticipated seventh LP, set for release this spring through Apport and Virgin Music, will feature the single ‘Dies Irae,’ available for listening. The album is anticipated to be the first of a series of four records and is deeply rooted in inspiration drawn from Wolf’s new location in East Kent. The album will capture Wolf’s journey through addiction recovery and the heartbreaking loss of his mother to cancer.

Shaped around the pagan wheel of the year and infused with various Kentish rituals related to harvest, Crying The Neck dives into the theme of exploring grief and survival through the lens of folklore. The artist emphasizes his personal connection to the album, as he was intimately involved in writing, arranging, and producing the album, evoking his early works on albums such as Lycanthropy and Wind In The Wires. Traditional instruments like the viola, Appalachian dulcimer, baritone ukulele, kantale, and Atari play central roles in the music’s creation.

In Wolf’s words, he delves deep into folklore beyond the surface description of rituals. For instance, he elucidates the significance of the hooden horse ritual, viewing it as a poignant symbol of grief. Wolf reflects on the magical essence of this ritual, suggesting that those who have passed on possess a supernatural guidance role in the lives of the living.

Crying The Neck resonates with the familiar threads of Wolf’s emotional journey, particularly seen in the song ‘Dies Irae,’ centered around the passing of his mother from cancer. Drawing from the Latin Requiem Mass, the track symbolizes a declaration of life during the final days before the loss of a loved one. This time is portrayed as an opportunity to deepen connections with each other and embrace joy amidst imminent sorrow. Wolf intricately weaves this narrative as an imagined conversation with his mother, with his sister, Jo Apps, joining in to sing backing vocals—a poignant moment to share a symbolic last dance in memory of their mother.

Patrick Wolf’s innovative approach in crafting Crying The Neck establishes a unifying theme rooted in folklore and personal experience. This deeply introspective and emotionally charged album opens a window into the artist’s journey of healing and transformation amid profound loss and growth.
