Disruption as passenger attempts to open emergency exit during long international flight

A recent incident aboard a Plus Ultra Airlines flight from Madrid, Spain, to Caracas, Venezuela, has captured online attention after a passenger attempted to open an emergency exit mid-flight, resulting in chaos. The unruly passenger, described as “restless” by the airline spokesperson, initially caused a disturbance by yelling and slapping a nearby passenger who was asleep. Flight attendants intervened, moving the disruptive passenger to a different seat to prevent further disturbance.

However, the situation escalated when the same passenger tried to open the emergency exit door mid-flight. In a viral video, crew members can be seen struggling to restrain the individual as shocked onlookers react to the unfolding drama. Eventually, the crew managed to subdue the passenger, tying him up and securing him at the back of the plane until the flight reached its destination. The apprehended passenger was later detained upon landing in Caracas.

During the chaos, one flight attendant sustained a fractured fibula while trying to restrain the passenger. The injured crew member received medical treatment for the fracture, which necessitated a few weeks of recovery. The motive behind the passenger’s attempt to open the emergency exit remains unclear, particularly given the technical impossibility of opening such doors on modern aircraft like the Airbus A330 once they reach an altitude of 10,000 feet. The sealed nature of the doors is necessary due to the pressure differential between the cabin and outside air.

While this incident is rare, it is not unprecedented in aviation history. In 2023, a similar event occurred on a South Korean flight when a passenger managed to open an emergency exit just before the plane landed, causing panic among passengers. Experts have attributed this occurrence to the equalization of air pressure during the descent, enabling the door to be opened at very low altitudes, as noted by former Marine Col. Steve Ganyard.

Despite the potential dangers posed by such instances, airlines have strict safety measures and protocols in place to prevent and address such occurrences. In this case, the swift action of the cabin crew ensured the safety of all passengers and averted a potential disaster. While disruptive incidents like these are rare, they serve as a reminder of the importance of adhering to safety regulations and guidelines while traveling on commercial flights. Travelers can take comfort in the fact that airlines prioritize passenger safety and are prepared to handle any unforeseen events that may arise during flights.
