Legendary rock band debuts first new song in over 40 years
Bachman-Turner Overdrive has made a significant comeback with the release of their first new song in over 40 years. Titled “60 Years Ago,” the track is a heartfelt homage to the band’s Canadian origins and features the musical talent of Neil Young, another iconic figure from Canada.
Lead singer and co-founder Randy Bachman expressed the band’s sentiment behind the song, describing it as a tribute to their formative years in Winnipeg during the 1960s. This period marked a golden age for the city’s music scene, often likened to the vibrancy of Liverpool in North America. The track captures the essence of their youth, celebrating the diverse talents that emerged during that time.
Receiving praise from Rolling Stone, the song is commended for its ability to capture the essence of classic BTO sound from decades past. With a guitar solo by Neil Young and vocals from former co-founder Fred Turner, the piece also includes references to other notable Canadian musicians such as Buffalo Springfield, The Guess Who, and Burton Cummings. Young, a former member of Buffalo Springfield, and Bachman and Cummings, known for their work in The Guess Who, have left an indelible mark on the Canadian music scene.
Reflecting on their journey through the passage of time, the lyrics of “60 Years Ago” evoke nostalgia and wisdom. Randy Bachman’s poignant vocals reflect on the band’s youth, reminiscing about the cold winter days spent indoors creating music. The track serves as a testament to the enduring passion for rock and roll that has sustained them throughout the decades.
Formed in 1973, Bachman-Turner Overdrive quickly rose to prominence in the rock music scene, gaining induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2014. Known for chart-topping hits like “Takin’ Care of Business” and “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet,” the band has solidified its status as a revered figure in classic rock history.
Despite a hiatus in releasing new material, “60 Years Ago” marks a resurgence for the band, offering fans a taste of their distinctive sound once again. The track is the first original piece since 1984, breathing new life into the Bachman-Turner Overdrive legacy.
With a renewed spirit, Bachman-Turner Overdrive has embarked on a tour, with various concert dates scheduled throughout the U.S. and Canada for 2025. The lineup includes Randy Bachman along with a new generation of musicians, such as Randy’s son Tal Bachman on guitar, continuing the band’s legacy into the future.
As they continue to captivate audiences with their timeless sound, Bachman-Turner Overdrive remains a beacon of classic rock excellence, proving that the spirit of rock and roll lives on through the ages.
