A well-known footbridge in Lincoln is scheduled for demolition in the upcoming month in conjunction with a significant hotel project in the city center. Situated over Melville Street, the footbridge, renowned for its panoramic view of Lincoln Cathedral, will no longer be accessible to the public starting on Monday, May 5. To facilitate the demolition process, road closures on Broadgate and Melville Street are set to be in effect from 7pm on Friday, May 16 until 6am on Monday, May 19. The adjacent City Square location was recently emptied to make room for the development of Lincolnshire Co-op’s prestigious hotel venture. Negotiations with an international hotel developer and operator are at an advanced stage, while interest from multiple developers for residential projects on the surrounding land has also been expressed. The footbridge has been identified as an obstruction to development, both practically and aesthetically. Kevin Kendall, Lincolnshire Co-op’s head of property, expressed satisfaction with the ongoing progress of the project and anticipates introducing new amenities to the local area to boost tourism in Lincoln and address housing needs. Gratitude was extended to Eddisons and UDCS Demolition for efficiently managing the demolition process and minimizing disruptions. The bridge has been a favorite spot for photographers due to the stunning view it offers of Lincoln Cathedral. Kay Fleming, proprietor of Fabric Corner nearby, lamented the necessity of removing the footbridge, referring to it as a local landmark. She fondly described it as the “scenic route” due to the spectacular view at the top, acknowledging the effort required to ascend but highlighting the rewarding vista. A local resident known as Chris expressed regret over the impending demolition, acknowledging the bridge’s aging appearance. Chris shared a preference for the physical challenge of climbing the footbridge over utilizing the crossings. As preparations for the footbridge demolition progress, the community reflects on its significance and the changes it will bring to the cityscape.
