Daydream Plus (featuring members of Tomb Mold) release new track “More Time Alone”
Daydream Plus, a musical project with members from the renowned death metal band Tomb Mold, has recently unveiled a new track from their upcoming debut album, “Second Last Day of Summer.” This album, set to release on 10th July through Run For Cover Records, showcases a unique blend of math rock, city pop, and ’90s emo elements that capture the nostalgic essence of the fading summer season. Following the well-received lead single “Speed Limit,” “More Time Alone” features intricate musicianship and sweet melodicism, enhanced by a city pop touch with a saxophone solo by Joseph Shabason (of Destroyer, War on Drugs), creating a perfect soundtrack for a warm June evening.
Led by Tomb Mold’s Payson Power, along with Max Klebanoff and Kevin Sia, Daydream Plus ventured into melodic and catchy compositions far removed from their main band’s aggressive style when forming in 2020. Through two EPs, they fine-tuned their bubbly mix of math rock, jazz, and city pop, along with influences from video game soundtracks and anime scores, establishing a distinct sound. With their debut album, the group has demonstrated the project’s endurance, elevating the music and storytelling to new heights.
Recorded by Darren McGill and mixed by Arthur Rizk, “Second Last Day of Summer” showcases the impressive musicality familiar to Tomb Mold fans but directed towards creating lush and appealing sounds. Power’s video game-inspired approach infuses the album with detailed storytelling, resembling a richly constructed fantasy world solely through instrumentals. Guests like American Football’s Steve Lamos and Ryo Kishimoto of Fox Capture Plan add depth and richness to the album, enhancing its immersive experience.
Featuring surprising guests and a detailed storyline capturing the essence of city pop both sonically and spiritually, “Second Last Day of Summer” aims to evoke the feeling of opening a can of soda on a carefree day. With a blend of influences and a focus on the minutest details, the album recreates moments of fleeting perfection, reminiscent of times spent with friends on idyllic days that eventually fade away.
Emphasizing their video game affinity, Daydream Plus collaborated with Batlab Electronics to create an alternative chiptune version of “Second Last Day of Summer” titled “Extended Forecast,” available exclusively in a limited NES compatible cartridge. The album, featuring tracks like “Metropolitan Mirage,” “Lockpick,” and “Wave Goodbye,” showcases the trio’s unique musical world, combining intricate math rock sensibilities with smooth jazz influences and compelling storytelling.
