GRUESOME Releases Music Video “A Darkened Window” and Reveals Upcoming Album

Gruesome, the band known for bringing back the spirit of early ’90s Florida death metal and inspired by the iconic Chuck Schuldiner and Death, has announced their long-awaited new album, Silent Echoes, set to drop on June 6, 2025, through Relapse Records, signaling their return after a seven-year hiatus.

The first preview of this upcoming record is the music video for “A Darkened Window,” which was directed by The Coin. The band shared their insights on the song, stating that it perfectly pairs with The Coin’s visuals, capturing the essence of modern existence where every human emotion becomes commercialized. The video exposes the synthetic and terrifying nature of grooming, filtering, and morphing emotions into something artificial and dystopian.

While Gruesome’s roots in classic death metal remain strong, Silent Echoes showcases a departure from the raw aggression found in Savage Land and Twisted Prayers. The band’s latest offering ventures into deeper musical territories, embracing complexity and technicality reminiscent of Death’s groundbreaking album Human from 1991.

The deliberate sonic progression of Silent Echoes is dedicated to Sean Reinert, their late mentor, who was a prolific drummer known for his work with Cynic and Death. Initially set to produce the album, Reinert’s sudden passing in 2020 had a profound impact on the band, particularly drummer Gus Rios, who was Reinert’s closest friend.

Following Reinert’s tragic death, the band members, Rios, along with vocalist/guitarist Matt Harvey, lead guitarist Daniel Gonzalez, and bassist Robin Mazen, decided to use Silent Echoes as a tribute. Reinert’s influence can be felt throughout the entire record, resonating in its intricate rhythms and the contemplative, almost spiritual songwriting style.

In stark contrast to their previous albums, the band expressed a more earnest and focused tone on Silent Echoes, with Harvey mentioning, “There’s less winking at the audience on this one.” The record’s thematic depth and musical complexity showcase a more sincere direction that pays homage to Reinert’s legacy and contribution to their musical journey.
