A-ha lead singer Morten Harket has recently disclosed his diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease at the age of 65. The announcement was made through an article on the band’s official website written by their biographer Jan Omdahl, who revealed that the singer had already undergone brain surgery twice in light of this condition. Harket expressed his acceptance of the diagnosis, citing his father’s approach to aging gracefully as an inspiration.

Best known for their hit song “Take On Me,” A-ha gained international fame with their debut album Hunting High and Low in 1985, showcasing Harket’s distinctive falsetto vocals. Omdahl described Harket as not only a talented musician but also a father of five and a grandfather, facing a new battle against his own body with the onset of Parkinson’s disease.

Despite dealing with the challenges of Parkinson’s, Harket had kept his condition private, known only to a close circle of individuals, until this recent public revelation. The decision to go public was not an easy one due to the unforeseen consequences and stress associated with sharing this personal news.

Parkinson’s disease, as explained by the NHS, is caused by a loss of nerve cells in the substantia nigra region of the brain, leading to a reduction in dopamine levels. Symptoms can manifest as shaking, slow movement, muscle stiffness, as well as emotional issues like anxiety and depression.

Harket has undergone deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery in both hemispheres of his brain, which reportedly has helped alleviate some of the symptoms. However, he still faces uncertainty regarding his future as a singer due to vocal challenges. Despite this, he remains pragmatic and seeks to explore new creative avenues beyond singing.

Acknowledging the rollercoaster nature of living with Parkinson’s, Harket emphasized the importance of finding a balance between medication, brain signals, sleep, blood sugar levels, and mindset. While the journey is not without its difficulties, he remains grateful for the support of healthcare professionals and urges fans not to worry.

Reflecting on his illness becoming public knowledge, Harket shared his evolving perspective, prioritizing honesty over secrecy. Recognizing the impact of his legacy with A-ha and his solo career, the singer remains focused on his health and creative pursuits, aiming to make the most of his journey with Parkinson’s disease.

Celebrating the camaraderie and success of A-ha, bandmate Mags Furuholmen expressed support for Harket and his family during this challenging time. As they navigate the changes brought about by Parkinson’s, the band remains grateful for the enduring impact of their music on audiences worldwide.
