This week on MI Local, Detroit-based singer-songwriter Jon Mikal-Bartee from The Idiot Kids shared his newest single, “Zeros & Ones,” with listeners. The song, set for official release this Friday, incorporates themes of identity and self-empowerment, underscored by fast punk tempos and fierce guitar riffs. Bartee’s appearance on the show coincided with the beginning of Pride Month, aligning with the message of inclusivity and diversity promoted in his music.

During his interview on MI Local, Bartee discussed the genesis of the new single and the broader conversation about gender binarism that it aims to spark. He also shed light on the transitions within The Idiot Kids, a project he co-founded over a decade ago. As band members’ lives evolve and new responsibilities arise, Bartee has taken on more of a solo role in writing and recording, notably mixing the group’s second full-length album, “Chapels,” himself. Despite these changes, The Idiot Kids continue to deliver electrifying performances, with upcoming shows in Kalamazoo at Bell’s Brewery and at the Lager House in Detroit.

The Idiot Kids, initially formed in the early 2010s by Bartee and his high school friends, blend elements of punk, glam, and classic rock ‘n’ roll in their music. Known for their energetic live shows and impassioned crescendos, the band has maintained a loyal following throughout the years. MI Local previously featured The Idiot Kids performing live in-studio, giving listeners a taste of their distinctive sound.

On this week’s episode, listeners were treated to an exclusive premiere of “California” by the Ethan Marc Band, from their debut album “Bad Days.” This release, accompanied by vinyl sales benefiting the mental health nonprofit Common Ground, showcases Marc’s introspective songwriting, drawing from personal struggles to weave a narrative of perseverance and optimism. With a fusion of indie-rock and pop influences, the Ethan Marc Band’s music resonated with audiences, who can catch them live at El Club and other venues.

Additional highlights on the show included new music from local indie-rock acts like Ricochet the Kid and the dynamic sister-duo Jackamo, who unveiled their latest tracks. Moreover, MI Local featured upcoming performances by artists such as hip-hop artist Jah Connery, set to debut songs from his new album, “The Delicate Art of Love,” at Trixie’s in Hamtramck. The playlist also included tunes from Chirp and Sonic Smut, adding to the vibrant array of local talent showcased each week on MI Local.

With a diverse lineup of musical talent and a plethora of live shows to explore, MI Local continues to be a beacon for Detroit’s vibrant music scene. Stay tuned for more exciting premieres, interviews, and performances on future episodes of the show.
