Molly Maguires revisit classic songs with release of ‘Public Enemies’

Molly Maguires, a band known for their diverse stylistic approach, has seamlessly blended alt-rock, folk, blues, and soul to create a unique and cohesive sound. Formed by co-vocalist, guitarist JJ Sorensen from Westerly and co-vocalist Meghan Earle from Assonet, Massachusetts, Molly Maguires’ creative core is rooted in their collaborative songwriting. The band’s lineup is completed by guitarist Jesse Coppa, multi-instrumentalist Jason G. Taylor, bassist Nathan Johnson III, and drummer Sean Scro. In their latest album release titled “Public Enemies,” Molly Maguires revisits older material that predates their previous work.

Despite its recent release date, “Public Enemies” actually originates from the early days of Molly Maguires. The album explores a real narrative surrounding a crisis that is often overlooked in society. Featuring violinist Big Lux, the album dives into a concept that sheds light on a New England mill town during a peak opioid epidemic. Sorensen reveals that the album was written during a time when he and Earle first started playing music together about 15 years ago.

“Public Enemies” tells the story of an unnamed couple in the midst of the opioid epidemic. Separated by circumstances, the couple reunites only to face a tragic turn of events, testing the resilience of their relationship. Despite the dark and somber themes, the album explores moments of joy amidst hardship, showcasing the complexities of human emotions.

Songs like “October Sky,” featuring soulful vocals from Earle and gritty delivery from Sorensen, highlight the band’s dynamic range. The grungy guitar tones juxtaposed with the soothing violin melodies create a unique and compelling sound. Tracks like “Walk Me Out” and “For a Few $ More” further showcase Molly Maguires’ ability to infuse different genres like punk rock into their music.

In celebration of the album release, Molly Maguires will be hosting a special event at Crook Point Brewing Company in East Providence. The “jamboree” will feature an opening performance by singer-songwriter Zach Searle, promising a vibrant and engaging show for attendees. As fans eagerly await the event, they can listen to “Public Enemies” on various platforms, immersing themselves in the band’s captivating storytelling and musical prowess.
