Budos Band solidifies future with new label, album.
Breaking: Voting begins for the Georgia PSC Democratic primary runoff
The Budos Band, a renowned instrumental group from Staten Island, is gearing up to deliver their signature funky blend at Variety Playhouse this Thursday. With more than two decades of experience under their belt, the band is embracing a more laid-back approach by opting for short tour stints and maintaining a relaxed vibe.
Baritone saxophone player Jared Tankel expressed the band’s excitement about their upcoming performance in Atlanta, highlighting how hitting their musical stride typically happens a few days into a tour. This performance will coincide with the release of their latest album, “Budos Band VII,” the first full-length record distributed by Diamond West Records, a label established by Tankel and guitarist Tom Brenneck after parting ways with their longtime home Daptone.
The band’s transition to a new label comes as some of its members have relocated far from their original base in Staten Island, embracing a more scattered approach to their collaborative efforts. Tankel and Brenneck’s vision for Diamond West Records focuses on nurturing real career artists and promoting physical products like vinyl records, tapping into the resurgence of interest in physical music formats. In addition to the Budos Band, the label has welcomed Brazilian singer RogĂȘ, who has been gaining traction in North America despite the challenges of being a Portuguese-language artist.
Tankel revealed that the label has an impressive lineup of three more records slated for release in the next year, signaling an exciting period of growth and creativity for the band and its collaborators. The band’s latest album, “Budos Band VII,” was recorded outside of New York for the first time, providing an invigorating change of scenery for the group members, who channeled their energy into an intense five-day recording session.
The resulting album features 11 tracks that encapsulate the band’s eclectic musical style, drawing inspiration from a fusion of genres like heavy rock, Afrobeat, and jazz. Tracks like “Night Raid” and “Thrice Crowned” showcase the band’s dynamic range, blending intricate horn arrangements with gritty guitar riffs and driving percussion. The creative direction of drummer Brian Profilio, a fan of fantasy fiction, shines through in the album’s imaginative song titles and mystical artwork, adding an extra layer of depth to the band’s visual identity.
As Budos Band continues to evolve and expand its horizons beyond their roots, their latest album stands as a testament to their enduring commitment to innovation and creative expression. With a renewed sense of purpose and a fresh perspective on their musical journey, the band’s upcoming performance in Atlanta promises to be a vibrant celebration of their indelible artistry and unwavering passion for pushing boundaries in the world of instrumental music.
