Foo Fighters achieve new record with 12th No. 1 hit on rock chart

The Foo Fighters have made music history once again with their latest track, “Today’s Song,” soaring to the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Rock & Alternative Airplay chart. This accomplishment marks the band’s 12th time at the top, a record that no other band has come close to matching. “Today’s Song” was released in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Foo Fighters’ self-titled debut album and quickly climbed two spots within a single week, garnering over 5.5 million impressions by July 17.

The success of “Today’s Song” did not stop at one chart, as it also reached No. 6 on Alternative Airplay, No. 10 on Mainstream Rock Airplay, and No. 32 on Adult Alternative Airplay. Fans enthusiastically streamed the track, hitting play 1.3 million times in the first week alone. This recent No. 1 hit follows their previous success with “Under You,” which dominated the charts for six weeks in 2023. A few months ago in March, “The Glass” peaked at No. 5, further solidifying the Foo Fighters’ stronghold on the music scene. Their first-ever No. 1 track was “Wheels” back in November 2009.

The band’s impressive record extends beyond just this recent accomplishment. With a total of 32 top 10 hits on Alternative Airplay, they have surpassed Green Day by four songs. On Mainstream Rock Airplay, the Foo Fighters have outperformed Shinedown, setting another record with 33 top 10 entries. Their 2023 album, But Here We Are, also made waves by claiming the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Top Alternative Albums chart, accumulating a staggering 198,000 equivalent album units and counting.

Reflecting on their journey, lead singer and guitarist Dave Grohl shared on the Foo Fighters’ website, “Over the years, we’ve had moments of unbridled joy, and moments of devastating heartbreak. Moments of beautiful victory, and moments of painful defeat. We have mended broken bones and broken hearts. But we have followed this road together, with each other, for each other, no matter what. Because in life, you just can’t go it alone.”
