Belinda Carlisle, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and frontwoman of the Go-Go’s, is making her musical comeback with the release of her ninth studio album, Once Upon a Time in California, which is set to be available on August 29. This album comprises 10 fresh tracks, including a new version of the Harry Nilsson classic, “One,” which comes after the initial single release from the album, a reimagining of The Hollies’ “The Air That I Breathe” that premiered in June.

Carlisle acknowledges that her interpretation of “One” marks a departure from her usual style. She expressed, “It was fun covering this song that I always loved. I listened to different versions and we decided to go for more of a jazzy approach which fit with the video concept which is a nod to Bob Fosse. I’ve never done anything like this before, so I think it might be a surprise for some of my fans.”

According to a press statement, Once Upon a Time in California serves as “a loving tribute to the melodies and memories of her youth.” The album features an array of covers, including Burt Bacharach & Hal David’s “Anyone Who Had a Heart” and other favorites such as “If You Could Read My Mind,” “Never My Love,” “Time in a Bottle,” “Superstar,” “Everybody’s Talkin’,” “Reflections of My Life,” and more.

Discussing the inspiration behind the album, Carlisle shared, “I was born and raised in California at a time when music was an important part of Californian culture. This collection of songs is the best representation of what I loved back then that I could think of — listening to it brings back so many memories of a time and a California that doesn’t really exist anymore.”

Once Upon a Time in California will be accessible in various formats, including CD, vinyl (including picture disc and signed editions), and digital platforms starting August 29. This release marks Belinda Carlisle’s return to the music scene with a fresh perspective on classic songs that resonate with her Californian roots.
