Former Outcry Rock Band Member Steve Bryant Thrives in New Jazz Group RED123
Steve Bryant, the talented guitarist, shares his journey from the rock band Outcry to the jazz trio RED123, showcasing his musical evolution and growth. Bryant’s musical career started at a young age when he learned to play the French horn and later transitioned to guitar, setting the stage for his future in music. After a stint in the United States Navy Band, Bryant ventured into pop-rock with Outcry, releasing albums and touring in the 1990s.
In the 2000s, the drummer Eric Clark invited Bryant to join RED123, a jazz trio that dabbled in the music of Pat Metheny. Despite the group disbanding shortly after, Bryant continued to explore his musical roots by becoming a music teacher and band director while offering lessons through his business, Manasquan Music Academy. The pandemic proved to be a turning point for Bryant, spurring him to delve into his creativity and work on his music in his basement studio, rediscovering his passion for improvisational music and jazz.
As a result of his creative resurgence, Bryant embarked on a solo project under the name RED123, releasing two albums: “Folk Song” in 2022 and “New Town” in January of the following year. Reflecting on the essence of “New Town,” Bryant describes it as a metaphorical destination, symbolizing a journey or transition in life captured through his music. The album’s songs resonate with Bryant’s personal experiences, with “There Will Be a Day” holding a special place for him due to its poignant message of hope and perseverance.
RED123’s latest album features a collaborative effort with accomplished musicians who helped shape Bryant’s vision into reality. From keyboards and drums to bass and harmonica, the album reflects the collective talent and artistry of those involved. Bryant acknowledges the invaluable contribution of his collaborators, noting their role in breathing life into his music.
Despite his teaching career, Bryant remains active in the music scene, performing at various venues in New Jersey, including Triumph Restaurant & Brewery in Red Bank. The upcoming Long Branch Jazz & Blues Festival will showcase RED123’s eclectic repertoire, featuring songs from both albums like the renowned Glen Campbell hit “Wichita Lineman.” Bryant’s performance at the festival promises an array of music that embodies his artistic evolution and passion for jazz.
