Indie rock band Butterfly releases new song after eight-year hiatus

Line 3 Butterfly, the indie rock band, has made a comeback with a new song after an eight-year hiatus and has been chosen as the featured artist for Melon’s “Track Zero” project in September. The band members, Nam Sang-ah, Sung Ki-wan, and Kim Nam-yoon, recently spoke about their return and music on Melon Station’s ‘Track Zero,’ sharing their interviews and playlists of major songs in Melon magazine.

The band had taken a break in 2019 but returned with vocalist Nam Sang-ah, bassist Kim Nam-yoon, and guitarist Sung Ki-wan performing together after nine years at the Pentaport Rock Festival last month. They also released a new mini-album titled “Joyful Purple Outside.”

When asked about their feelings rejoining the group after years, Sung Ki-wan humorously expressed regret for being away and emphasized the importance of not running away from home. Kim Nam-yoon mentioned how quickly six years had passed while working on drama music and album production. Nam Sang-ah, who had moved to Nice, France, and opened a Korean restaurant with her husband, shared how gratifying it was to connect with people through music and how it felt like coming home after each performance.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Line 3 Butterfly’s debut, with Sung Ki-wan downplaying the significance of anniversaries yet acknowledging how the spark lit by the Pentaport programmer led to a chain reaction prompting their activities. Nam Sang-ah shared that a pivotal moment in her life inspired her to return to singing, expressing her joy in reuniting with Ki-wan for the band’s activities.

In their discussions about the new album “Joyful Purple Outside,” the band members revealed various anecdotes and behind-the-scenes details. Additionally, they shared their favorite hidden masterpieces in music, with Kim Nam-yoon selecting nine and the number “Suspension,” Sung Ki-wan choosing Gal Costa’s “Divino Maravilhoso,” and Nam Sang-ah picking “Easy” to showcase their musical tastes.

Butterfly’s upcoming solo concert to mark the album release quickly sold out within two minutes, necessitating additional performances. The band members highlighted the fleeting opportunity to see Nam Sang-ah perform before she returned to France and expressed their anticipation for a special reunion with a larger audience after a long hiatus.
