Mavis Staples, with over seventy years in the music industry, continues to showcase the power and beauty of her voice. Her upcoming album, “Sad And Beautiful World,” set for release on November 7th, features a mix of classic and original songs alongside an impressive lineup of music icons.

The title track of the album, also named “Sad And Beautiful World,” was written by the late Mark Linkous, known as Sparklehorse. Staples’ rendition of the song is poignant, with a somber rhythm and profound lyrics that explore the delicate balance between sorrow and hope. Her soulful delivery adds a layer of intimacy, drawing listeners into the emotional core of the song.

Produced by Brad Cook, whose portfolio includes artists like Bon Iver and Waxahatchee, the album aims to highlight Staples’ iconic voice. Cook’s approach was to strip back the initial recordings to showcase Staples’ vocals before layering on additional instrumentation. This method ensures that Staples’ voice remains the focal point, allowing her phrasing and power to shine through without distraction.

Inspired by collaborative albums like the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s “Will The Circle Be Unbroken,” Cook wanted to create a sense of community around Staples. The record features a stellar lineup of guest artists, including Buddy Guy, Bonnie Raitt, Jeff Tweedy, and Justin Vernon, among others. Each artist brings their unique touch to the album, emphasizing Staples’ enduring influence across generations.

“Sad And Beautiful World” delves into decades of American music, blending new compositions with reimagined classics. Staples’ interpretations of tracks like Curtis Mayfield’s “We Got To Have Peace” and Jackie DeShannon’s “Put A Little Love In Your Heart” feel both nostalgic and contemporary, underscoring the timeless relevance of her message of hope and justice.

At 85 years old, Staples’ voice remains as resonant as ever, reflecting a lifetime of experience and conviction. From her early days with The Staple Singers to her solo career collaborating with artists like Prince and Wilco, Staples’ voice has been a constant force in the music industry. Her ability to infuse old songs with new life and create timeless pieces is a testament to her enduring legacy.

“Sad And Beautiful World” is not just a record; it’s a chapter in Staples’ ongoing journey of musical innovation and expression. The album captures the essence of Staples’ artistry, showcasing her unwavering passion and commitment to uplifting audiences through her music.
