Pop punk band FLY RIGHT debuts music video for “The Line” on IDIOTEQ.com
Los Angeles-based band Fly Right has unveiled their newest music video for the track “The Line” from their tenth single, released through Bad Self Records. The video was directed by Brian G. Addie and Anton Floquet, giving fans a visual representation of the band’s sound, which falls between pop-punk and alt-rock, akin to bands like Frnd Crcl and Goalkeeper, with emotional depth reminiscent of Paramore and the dynamics of Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.
Lead vocalist Matty McNamara recalls the moment of inspiration for “The Line,” sharing that it was a cold December night in Cleveland when he found himself enamored with a new love interest. Feeling vulnerable yet exhilarated by the situation, the lyrics and melody of the song poured out of him. He reminisces, “The lyrics and riffs poured out of me. By the way, that same girl is now my fiancée.”
“The Line” captures the tension between excitement and insecurity, with raw and simple lyrics like “Put a smile on for the day / Getting crushed I’ll pretend it’s okay.” McNamara’s honesty shines through lines that express both defeat and unwavering devotion, such as “I will do anything you want me to do / Put myself on the line you can run through.”
Having been immersed in the punk scene for years, McNamara ventured into Fly Right after touring with another band, seeking a fresh start to create music that aligns with his values. Drawing from his experiences opening for prominent bands like The Used and Sum 41, he formed Fly Right as a platform to promote doing the right thing and embracing resilience in the face of mistakes.
Despite spending over a decade in Los Angeles, McNamara admits feeling like an outsider in the city’s alternative music scene, noting the challenge of navigating its underground culture. While he finds a certain pretentiousness in some local punk shows, he gravitates towards more inclusive and welcoming mainstream punk communities. McNamara continues to explore local talent, supporting bands like Zzzahara, Rearranged Face, Phantom Code, and Sunburnt, highlighting the camaraderie within the music scene.
As Fly Right continues to evolve, they are focusing on creating new singles and potentially a longer format release. With a desire to return to live performances, the band is actively seeking opportunities to connect with audiences. “The Line” serves as a poignant reflection of the band’s journey, capturing the essence of falling in love and surrendering to the chaos, where punk energy intersects with genuine emotion.
