Over the past ten years, T.M. Krishna has been a prominent figure in the world of Carnatic music, literature, and activism, and he is currently involved in curating the upcoming KNMA Festival. Known for challenging societal norms, Krishna has been labeled as a “rebel” or a “rule-breaker,” yet he refuses to be confined by these narrow definitions. He believes that these labels are a form of laziness and lack of engagement, and he sees no need to either accept or reject them.

His decision to curate the KNMA Festival reflects his non-conformist nature, as he is focusing on ‘Voices of Diversity’ or what he prefers to call ‘non-exclusivity’. Through this festival, he aims to showcase a variety of life experiences, realities, and ideas through various forms of artistic expression such as music, poetry, and dance. The festival lineup includes performances by artists from different genres and styles, ranging from hip-hop to folk rock to classical music. Krishna emphasizes that what ties all these diverse performers together is their engagement with the present moment, creating a dynamic and inclusive atmosphere.

Reflecting on his own personal journey, Krishna acknowledges his privileged background but also recognizes the transformative power of music in raising questions about societal norms. He credits his upbringing for instilling in him a sense of intellectual curiosity and the ability to ask questions freely. Music, in particular, played a crucial role in challenging established norms, leading him to question why certain people are excluded from accessing art. These questions ultimately guided him towards an unconventional path that was not influenced by external expectations.

Throughout his career, Krishna has collaborated with various artists and groups working towards social change. He has performed with transgender musicians, engaged in cross-cultural artistic conversations, and brought socially relevant literature into the classical music domain. His work has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award and the Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration.

Currently, Krishna is working on a book that delves into the historical, philosophical, and constitutional aspects of India’s national symbols. He aims to raise important philosophical and societal questions through his writing, aligning with his belief that art should provoke thought and introspection.

The KNMA Festival, curated by T.M. Krishna, will take place at Sunder Nursery in Delhi from October 9 to 12. It promises to be a diverse and engaging showcase of artistic talent, reflecting Krishna’s commitment to inclusivity and creative expression.
