New Film from New Bedford Sheds Light on Social Media’s Negative Aspects
New Bedford will host two free screenings of a documentary that sheds light on the darker aspects of social media. While we all appreciate the convenience and connectivity of social platforms, there is also a negative side that often goes unnoticed. From cyberbullying to extortion and criminal activities, these screenings aim to bring attention to the harmful influence of social media on individuals, especially young people.
The documentary, titled Can’t Look Away: The Case Against Social Media, delves into a court case that is currently unfolding. Rev. David Lima, Chair of the New Bedford Suicide Prevention Coalition, emphasized that the intention behind the film is not to demonize social media but to highlight how its dynamics can lead vulnerable individuals down dangerous paths. Young people, in particular, can be influenced by distorted messages and online behaviors that may have serious, and sometimes fatal, consequences.
Cathy Rutkowski, Co-Director of the Children’s Advocacy Center of Bristol County, shared insights on the detrimental impact of social media on children that her organization witnesses regularly. From exposure to inappropriate content like pornography and sextortion to getting trapped in harmful online environments, the dangers of unchecked social media use are evident. The documentary aims to start conversations and raise awareness about these issues, encouraging parents and guardians to engage with their children on safe and responsible online practices.
The first screening will take place on October 23 at 5 p.m. at Keith Middle School, followed by a second showing on November 6 at Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School. The events will offer refreshments, child care, and panel discussions to foster dialogue around the challenges posed by social media. Participants will also have the opportunity to interact with an attorney and individuals involved in the national lawsuit addressing social media-related issues.
By bringing this documentary to the community, organizers hope to stimulate critical discussions and empower individuals to navigate the digital landscape more consciously.
