Two individuals have been accused of murdering Ian Watkins, the former lead singer of Lostprophets, who died following an alleged assault at HMP Wakefield, according to West Yorkshire Police. Watkins, aged 48, was serving a 29-year sentence for committing child sex crimes. Despite emergency services being dispatched to the prison in West Yorkshire in response to the incident on Saturday morning, Watkins was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accused individuals, Rashid Gedel, 25, and Samuel Dodsworth, 43, both incarcerated at HMP Wakefield, have been charged with murder and are scheduled to appear before Leeds Magistrates’ Court later during the day. Gedel identifies as having a black background, while Dodsworth identifies as white British.
In December 2013, Watkins was sentenced to 29 years in prison with an additional six-year licensing period after confessing to a series of sex offenses, which included the attempted rape of an infant belonging to one of his fans. The artist was arrested following a drug-related search at his Pontypridd residence in September 2012, where numerous electronic devices were seized. Subsequent forensic investigations unveiled Watkins’ criminal activities.
In a previous incident in 2023, Watkins was subjected to an assault and was hospitalized. Fortunately, his injuries were deemed non-life-threatening. Speculations arose that Watkins had been held captive by three fellow inmates. In 2019, he was handed an additional 10-month sentence for possessing a mobile phone while in prison, which he alleged was coerced upon him by inmates intending to exploit women sending him fan mail.
An attempt to appeal against his 29-year prison sentence was dismissed in 2014. The Court of Appeal in Cardiff upheld his sentence, reinforcing the severity of his crimes against infant children. The court deemed the sentence, along with the extended licensing period, as suitable given the grotesque nature of Watkins’ offenses.
Among the grotesque materials uncovered during investigations were videos depicting Watkins engaging in sexual activities with children, including the attempted rape of an 11-month-old baby. In addition to this, he was found guilty of eleven other offenses, all of which ran concurrently with his initial 29-year sentence.
