According to Taylor, the album is a unique blend of jazzy rock, drawing inspiration from various musical influences. Taylor mentioned that if one were to combine Steely Dan, Dave Matthews, and Santana in a room, the resulting music might resemble his album. He emphasized that the musicians on the album are professionals, showcasing the talent of some of the best jazz musicians in Indianapolis.
The Mark Taylor Project band is gearing up to perform live in the near future, bringing the album’s vivid storytelling to life on stage. One of the musicians who inspired Taylor is bassist Mark Andes, known for his work with bands such as Spirit, Firefall, and Heart. Taylor expressed his admiration for Andes and shared a personal anecdote of meeting him during one of Andes’ performances in Denver.
Despite losing touch over the years, Taylor reconnected with Andes through social media, ultimately collaborating with the renowned musician on his album. Taylor gushed about the experience of working with someone whose music had a significant influence on him during his formative years. Notably, Andes played guitar on Taylor’s album, showcasing his versatility beyond his primary instrument, the bass.
In addition to Andes, percussionist Frank Loyd, who has been a longtime collaborator of Taylor’s, contributed to the album. Taylor’s musical journey dates back to his involvement with the band TimeSlip from 2014 to 2020, where he honed his songwriting skills and recorded a five-song EP. Taylor acknowledged the role of Roger Jenkins-Bass and his nightclub, The Point, in providing TimeSlip with valuable performance opportunities.
Drawing from a solid foundation in jazz, Taylor highlighted the complexity of the harmonies and chords featured in his songs. While not solely a jazz musician, Taylor’s understanding of jazz intricacies shines through in his compositions. As the primary songwriter on the album, Taylor also showcased his skills as a guitarist and lead vocalist, leading a talented lineup of musicians, including Tim Ragliff on keyboards, Justin Brewer on drums, and Rob Dixon on saxophone.
The album, which features 13 songs in total, delves into themes of lost sanctuary and spirituality in the contemporary world, weaving together Taylor’s personal experiences and encounters from his time in Colorado and southern Arizona. Through his storytelling prowess and musical versatility, Taylor has crafted a captivating concept album that promises to resonate with listeners.
