Dream Theater marks 40th year with Nassau Coliseum performance
Dream Theater is finally achieving one of its longstanding dreams as they are set to headline Nassau Coliseum for the first time on October 25, marking their 40th anniversary. Guitarist John Petrucci, reflecting on his experiences growing up in Kings Park, shared his excitement about performing at the venue where he attended countless concerts as a teenager. Having watched iconic bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Rush at Nassau Coliseum, Petrucci described this upcoming concert as a particularly special event for Dream Theater.
This milestone performance comes at a significant time for the band as they celebrate their 40th year and welcome back original drummer Mike Portnoy, who rejoined the group after having left in 2010. Portnoy’s return to the band was a process that unfolded over several years, beginning with personal reconnections between him and Petrucci in 2017, evolving into musical collaborations on various projects. The decision to reunite was rooted in a shared realization of life’s brevity, prompted by the passing of music icons like Neil Peart and Eddie Van Halen.
The renewed partnership between Petrucci and Portnoy led the band to enter the studio to record their 16th studio album, “Parasomnia,” which they will perform in its entirety at the upcoming Nassau Coliseum show. Describing the new album as a concept piece exploring sleep disturbances and dark phenomena, Petrucci emphasized the thematic relevance of the album’s Halloween release date. Portnoy highlighted the band’s collaborative creative process that has remained unchanged since their early days.
Reflecting on their beginnings in Kings Park in the late 1970s, members of Dream Theater shared fond memories of their musical beginnings. Petrucci and bassist John Myung’s friendship, forged at William T. Rogers Middle School, laid the foundation for their shared musical journey. Myung recalled their dedicated practice routines and mutual commitment to honing their craft, emphasizing the importance of hard work in their musical development.
Petrucci credited his Long Island upbringing for shaping his musical identity, noting the influence of the rock music scene and local musicians in his neighborhood. The guitarist’s passion for music blossomed during his teenage years, solidifying his lifelong commitment to the instrument. Following graduation from Kings Park High School, Petrucci and Myung enrolled at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where they crossed paths with Portnoy, forming the core of what would become Dream Theater.
The trio’s shared love for progressive rock and heavy metal bands like Rush, Yes, Iron Maiden, and Black Sabbath fueled their creative collaborations in Berklee and beyond. Opting to remain in Long Island, the band honed their craft in various makeshift rehearsal spaces, recording demos and playing local gigs to build their reputation. From humble beginnings in basements and small clubs on Long Island, Dream Theater evolved into a progressive metal powerhouse, capturing the hearts of fans worldwide with their intricate compositions and virtuosic performances.
