Both bands take modern branches from the post-punk tree and have a lot of fun with them. After doing 20 episodes as a co-host duo, Carson Tworow and I welcomed our first guest to the Upsample podcast this week. Our friend Madelyn Read works for the BC Co-Op Association on top of being a musician and songwriter, so we talked with her about the triangle of music-labour-business issues. There are two co-ops we wanted to bring up in particular: the now-defunct Ampled co-op, where I first got to know Read’s music, and the would-be Bandcamp competitor launching soon called Subvert.
This edition of 10 Things is likely the final entry in this series for the foreseeable future. It’s a compilation of highlights, mostly live music experiences, that I have not covered in the past few months. On October 10th, I attended Ches Smith’s Clone Row ensemble performance at the Revue Stage on Granville Island, featuring guitarists Liberty Ellman and Mary Halvorson, along with bassist Nick Dunston. Smith’s impressive height required adjusting the mic stand to provide articulate stage commentary. The Coastal Jazz event drew a sufficient audience. Smith’s drumming style merged various beat patterns and unconventional time shifts reminiscent of Ari Hoenig, alongside mallet work. Clone Row showcased intricate, progressive tracks from their recent album, featuring dual guitar arrangements, sampled elements, and collective improvisations. Dunston’s use of effects to produce ambient sounds from his bass instrument, coupled with the contrasting guitarists’ distinct playing postures, highlighted the group’s dynamic performance.
The following evening at the Cobalt, I witnessed the American indie rock trio Wombo perform songs from their latest album “Danger in Fives.” Sydney Chadwick, the band’s bassist and vocalist, showcased remarkable pitch control and vocal prowess while seamlessly blending her voice with musical nuances on the bass. Wombo delivered a high-energy set comprising multiple short tracks within a 45-minute timeframe. Originally scheduled at the Kingsway Club, the show was relocated, commencing late at 11:00 PM. The Montreal-based band Ribbon Skirt served as the opening act, promoting their debut album “Bite Down,” released earlier in the year.
