Bruce Springsteen releases short film for deluxe edition of ‘Nebraska’ album

Bruce Springsteen’s album “Nebraska” from 1982 is getting an expanded edition treatment with the release of a comprehensive five-disc box set containing never-before-heard recordings. Scheduled for release on October 17, 2025, from Sony Music, the “Nebraska ’82: Expanded Edition” will include sessions with The E Street Band known as “Electric Nebraska,” as well as solo outtakes featuring tracks like “Born in the U.S.A.,” “Pink Cadillac,” and “Working on the Highway.” The package will also include a newly filmed performance of the album, alongside a remastered version of the original album, providing fans with an in-depth look at this lo-fi classic. This release coincides with the debut of the feature film “Deliver Me From Nowhere,” which delves into Springsteen’s life during this period. The set, available for pre-order, will be delivered in a 4-CD plus Blu-ray or 4-LP plus Blu-ray format.

A film titled “Inside Nebraska ’82: Expanded Edition,” directed by Thom Zimny, a regular collaborator with Springsteen, will accompany the box set and hit the screens on October 20.

In a sneak peek of the collection, an unreleased version of “Born in the U.S.A.” reveals a trio performance featuring Springsteen, Max Weinberg, and Garry Tallent. Springsteen shared that they discarded keyboards to deliver a raw and edgy performance, offering a new perspective on the track written alongside the original Nebraska album.

The compilation not only showcases the “Electric Nebraska” sessions but also includes rare solo recordings like “Losin’ Kind,” “Child Bride,” “Downbound Train,” along with tracks from a unique solo studio session in 1982. Furthermore, there will be a contemporary performance film of the Nebraska album, played live and captured at New Jersey’s Count Basie Theatre.

Springsteen’s revisit to his Nebraska songs, which he never toured back then, provides a fresh insight into the material, bringing a live touch to the tracks from over 40 years ago. Filmed without an audience, the intimate concert features light accompaniment from Larry Campbell and Charlie Giordano, maintaining the original essence of the recordings. Springsteen intended to let the music speak for itself without any narrative, commentary, or dialogue, focusing solely on the characters in the songs.

The weight and significance of revisiting the songs from Nebraska after all these years left a lasting impression on Springsteen, further solidifying the album’s revered status among fans. “Nebraska” is often referred to as the “holy grail,” with Springsteen himself acknowledging the magical quality that those songs hold within them.

Following the recent release of the “Tracks II: The Lost Albums” box set in June 2025, featuring a plethora of previously unreleased material, the “Nebraska ’82: Expanded Edition” is poised to deliver another treasure trove of unheard tracks. The upcoming feature film “Deliver Me from Nowhere,” in theaters from October 24, will provide an even deeper insight into the making of “Nebraska,” with Jeremy Allen White portraying Springsteen and Jeremy Strong as the long-time manager and producer Jon Landau.

Accompanying the release of the expanded edition is a tracklist providing fans with an overview of the unreleased material, session recordings, live performances, and more from the Nebraska era. The album tracklist includes outtakes, live sessions, and the complete live performance captured at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, NJ, contributing to a comprehensive look at this iconic chapter in Bruce Springsteen’s career.
