Welcome to the Brighton & Hove residents’ community corner series where we celebrate the city’s exceptional drag artists and performers who push boundaries and captivate audiences. This series aims to showcase the real people behind the personas and dive into their unique journeys and experiences. Today, we have the privilege of chatting with the punk rock queen of the Brighton drag scene, Ex-Girlfriend, who rose to fame as the winner of the 2024 Brighton Big Drag Pageant.

Ex-Girlfriend’s journey into drag began at the age of fifteen when she embarked on a musical career with a rock band. Through years of touring and self-discovery, including embracing her own bisexual identity, she found herself drawn to the world of drag. Influenced by artists like Raja from RuPaul’s Drag Race, Ex-Girlfriend saw a reflection of her punk spirit in the art of drag.

The origin of her drag name, Ex-Girlfriend, stems from a No Doubt song and her admiration for Gwen Stefani’s bold aesthetic. The layers of meaning behind her name, from music influences to personal connections, add depth to her stage persona and identity. Despite the evolving cultural landscape, Ex-Girlfriend emphasizes that drag remains a space of fun and entertainment for all, transcending barriers of gender, race, and sexuality.

Brighton’s drag scene holds a distinct edge that sets it apart from other cities, according to Ex-Girlfriend. Performances in Brighton are marked by daring acts like money stapling and fiery costume reveals, showcasing a fearless and avant-garde approach to drag. The city’s drag community merges the spotlight with activism, supporting initiatives like gender-affirming care for the trans community and fundraising for causes like World AIDS Day, Gaza, and Ukraine relief efforts.

Ex-Girlfriend’s signature drag style reflects her teenage influences and alternative roots. Embracing her goth, emo, and alternative fashion sensibilities, she partners with brands like Killstar for her everyday looks. For bespoke creations, her husband James, known as Arthur John Couture, and local costume makers like Dannie Does Drag, Bald Eagle Design, and Philip J Shaw bring her drag fantasies to life.

When it comes to favorite venues, Ex-Girlfriend holds a special place for Revenge, where she was a resident performer for four years. The energy and camaraderie of the audience make it a remarkable stage for her drag artistry. Performances at Brighton Dome and venues like Legends and Bar Broadway have further solidified her presence in the local drag scene.

Reflecting on Brighton’s drag royalty, Ex-Girlfriend expresses admiration for peers like Alfie Ordinary for their unparalleled work ethic and Vlad Von Kitsch for their exceptional makeup artistry. With a blend of entertainment, activism, and self-expression, Brighton’s drag scene continues to flourish as a diverse and inclusive community that celebrates creativity and diversity onstage.
